I just upgraded to 4 gigs of memory from 1 gig of memory on my laptop. Now when I start my computer there is a blank black screen. when i pull out one 2 gig stick it works and then i can put the other stick in and my computer runs fine. how can i fix this problem???

Firmware upgrade or its just not compatible with that brand or that much ram. Call the manufacturer of the laptop and ask them. If they wont talk with you for free then get online and do a live chat with them. It's usually free.
