black ink cartridge alone not printing black?

Specs: Windows Vista
I have installed 2 different bands of printers, all of them have the same problem. They will not print black or copy in black. The black cartridge is used when a picture is being printed or there is text in the printout.

Modern printers nowaday will print black or copy in black by blending ink from black and colored cartridges. I realize it's stupid but the printers manufacturer designed it this way to keep you buying set of black & color ink cartridges.

I am not understanding the exact problem.

Are you saying that you can not print any black text?

Yes that is correct, the only black text is in a print print out that has a pitcure with is like a page off the internet.

If I place a black and white drawing in my printer and press copy black only. nothing prints if I press color it will print in a shade of brown. This has happened on two different brands of printers. I have done the obvious, checked the preferences and I even tried to change to gray tone still did not work.
