Last night I decided to take an old hard drive apart. A Quantum 4GB Last time I did that was like 10 years ago, and I really wasn't paying attention to the components. I found that the most interesting part was the magnets - they're really strong! My question though is: What was in the little tiny white plastic packet? It was teany tiny black balls, like a thousand of them in the packet. What are those beads/balls? after I cut the packet, I dumped them in the trash...I didn't wanna touch them. What are they, and what are there purpose???

That's what I was thinking. Like the little packs of "silica gel" that come w/ a new pair of shoes. If you rip open the pack and throw the gels, they bounce like crazy. These black ones were sooo much smaller though, small like a grain of salt.

G'day,

Sounds like that's where your mouse stores its droppings during a data "dump".

Didn't you know that?
