hello, i have an amibios revision number 1005 on an asus p4p800vm. i went to thier website an downloaded bios revision 1008. i flashed to bios by the letter. bios would post and then give me the message "bad cmos setting, cmos date/time not set. reset time and date then rebooted. same message again about cmos settings. i cleared the bios, then checked battery voltage which was over 3 volts. rebooted, same results. was able to set defaults (pressf2) and get into windows no problem. went back to asus's website and got back revision 1005, flashed bios and all is well. my question is what could have been causing the problem. i have read horror stories about flashing the bios. with so many problems, why do they even bother with them in the first place? do some actually work LOL! thanks, Jim.

As with any upgrade, you takes your chances. Some are good and some are not so good. My advice is to not upgrade anything unless you have an excellent reason to do so. That goes double for Bios upgrades.

The bios upgrade can be very risky and at times render your mobo completly useless especially if you lose power while you are doing it. A lot of people have done the bios upgrades very successfully and their are the ones that are not as fortunate for what ever reason. But when it comes down to it, the person that wants to upgrade their bios should always make sure that they read all the info about it before just jumping into it.

Believe me I just didn't jump into it. I gave it alot of thought and read directions. Asus does have a version 1007. Was wondering if it needs that one first before 1008?

If your PC works, don't try and fix it with a BIOS upgrade. That is only used for fixing something that doesn't work. Why did you want to upgrade the BIOS? If it is to be able to use a higher CPU, then maybe I would try it. But in the long run, if you loose the Motherboard due to upgrading the BIOS, you'll end up buying another Motherboard, and have one for the junk pile. But to leave it alone and buy another Motherboard for an upgrade, you'll still have an extra good motherboard.
