I have a really strange problem. I have an ECS K7S5A motherboard and a Maxtor 40Gb IDE HD. My case and power supply is by Antec. My hard drive works great sometimes. But other times if my computer has been off for maybe half a day or so, when I go to turn it on, the BIOS won't see the hard drive. If I turn it off and on a couple times, it works fine.

Here's what I've tried so far:
-Tried flashing to different BIOS' and didn't work
-Tried changing the IDE cable, didn't work
-Tried changing the power cable that the HD uses from the power supply, and worked a little bit, but not for long.
-Ran a detailed diagnostic test that Maxtor has on the HD and it didn't find any problems.

...It seems like either the hard drive isn't getting power, or the IDE isn't finding the drive. But since I have tried a different IDE cable and power cable, and neither really seemed to work, I'm lost.

Any suggestions I could try?

...Oh yeah, since the CD-ROM drive is recognized everytime, I could try putting the HD on the second IDE chain, and put both the CD-ROM and HD on the same IDE cable, but I don't have a cable long enough to do that. If someone thinks that might work, I can try it though!

Change the power cable from your PSU to your HDD.

The controller on your HD could be failing. I would be backing stuff up right now if I were you.

It sounds like a problem with either the IDE controller or the hard drive. I would get a longer cable and try the hard drive on the second controller.

Alright, well I have both my CD-ROM and HD on the same IDE cable in the 2nd IDE slot on the motherboard, and it seems to be working fine now, so we'll how it does tomorrow after it's been off for a while. When I hooked up the CD-ROM to the first IDE slot, it didn't detect it, so it seems like it's the IDE slot on the motherboard. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll let you know how it turns out.
