i just bought a new 80 gig western digital HD i tried installing it but my bios will not detect it whenever i try to get it to detect it just locks up, so i set it as slave and bios will not detect it but windows will it detects all about 75 gigs. what i want to do is make it my master drive but im afraid i cant do that if bios wont detect it. i suspect the only reason windows detects it is because of my other hard drive other wise i cant get it to work on its own. if you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated

Hi
I would suggest you investigate what your bios supports. Get a bios utility to id the version ie. a bios diagnostic. Then if you need to use the 80G drive, you could do a couple of things. 1/ upgrade the bios [which can be problematic and expensive if the bios chip refuses to update properly] 2/ get and install a PCI ide card (which supports the faster data transfer modes) [no bios upgrade should be required]
