Hi. I have an old Packard Bell Legend 836CTD that I am currently upgrading. I have done the following upgrades to it:

400 AMD PowerLeap Upgrade Processor
104 MB SIMM Memory
27GB Hard Drive
SoundBlaster AWE64 ISA Card
100/10 IBM Ethernet ISA Card
56K Modem
2 USB Ports (PCI Card)
200 Watt PowerSupply

I have been having some problems with the USB ports, adding a video card and memory. The system manual says the computer will support up to 136MB memory. However, when I add another 32MB chip to the present 104 MB memory in the computer, the computer will not boot. The same problem happens with the video card. (I have several posts about this problem.) The USB ports also add another problem to this list. Although Windows recognized the card and I was able to install the drivers, nothing I connect to the USB ports are recognized by Windows (Iomega 250MB USB Zip Drive).

I am looking to upgrade the BIOS using a third party company. The BIOS I have now is a Phoenix BIOS 4.04 on a PB600 (Agoura) Motherboard. I have already upgraded the BIOS using the upgrades Packard Bell last released (1.20). Would a BIOS upgrade from a third party company fix these problems? What are some third party companies? Besides BIOS upgrades, is there any other way to fix these problems?

*Note: I have checked out Mr.Bios and they told me that I would have to get an upgrade from Packard Bell and that I could not use their product.

Thanks for any help.

Packard Bells are VERY proprietary systems. You would have to use a Packard Bell bios upgrade only! If you have onboard video, then it may be causing a problem when you add an add-in video card. As for the memory, is is 72 pin, or 168 pin memory? if its 72 pin, then what you have installed might be EDO/fast-page, and the 32 MB stick you are trying to add might be standard ram. These two cant be installed together. I would consider a newer barebones PC, because you have a good stuff thrown in to an old computer, and I think you would be happier as well if you did.
Good Luck
Robert
