Comment:

hi, i bought myself a new motherboard, cpu, and ram a few months ago but i'm really not very sure if i have it all configured properly for the best performance. my motherboard is an asus k8n, my cpu is an athlon 64 3000 (but it runs at only 1000mhz...is that normal?), and my ram is 1GB (2x 512mb) pc3200 from corsair (model twinx1024-3200c2). basically, i would like to find out what settings to change to get the most out of my system without impacting stability. i don't really want to overclock it, unless the hardware i have is very stable with overclocking. there are a lot of bios options that i can change, but i don't know enough about what they do to feel comfortable changing anything, but i also don't like just leaving it set to "auto", because it might not set things right. i've looked online to find the right settings but find mostly overclockers forums and all i want to know is how to set things manually to stock values without damaging my system. maybe after i've got that figured out and know what it all means i'll try overclocking, but i'd really like to just get a general idea of what all the settings do before i go around changing anything. so, i mainly want to know a) if my processor is set correctly for optimum performance, and if not, what should i change (and what would those settings actually DO)? b) how should my ram be configured for best performance?
c) is there anything else i can do?

if you need to know what kind of options i have in my cmos program, i can look for it and post it back. anyway, thank you for your time and i hope i can get some help =]

Don't change anything unless you know what you're changing. If you have the latest BIOS for your Mobo and the chipset drivers installed, it's probably running at it's max. An AMD Athlon 64 3000+ is acually a 1.8 gigahertz processor. The 3000 is a comparison to the Intel processor speeds. Downlaod and install a program called EVEREST to do a diagnostic view of what's going on in your machine. Good Luck.
