Subject: Bios sees device, no boot device EROS: Windows XP ProCPU/Ram: 3.0 GHz 2 Gig Ram |
Comment: Go here for the pics, of the problem, www.kcengineer.com/problem.htm Bios shows boot device, boot sequence menu does not, No boot device available error! I recently installed a ATA 133 PCI card on my Dell 8200. Then after booting up and installing the driver, I shut off the computer, then installed 1 new DVD drive along with my existing one (master and slave) and 1 new Maxtor 200GB ultra ATA 133 Hard drive to the new ATA PCI Card, so with my existing 2 I have (master and slave) and then 1 Maxtor to the PCI card, that make 3 total. But when I booted up, the computer said No boot devices, never had this error before, so I unplugged all the devices and just left the main hard drive plugged in, it booted fine, then I hooked them all up again and it said again, no boot devices, well, this time when I unhooked it all again and rebooted, it still said no boot devices. I really messed it up I guess because now it wont boot to anything. In the bios I see everything I hooked up to it, which it good, but under boot sequence, it shows no enabled devices and all they say is PROCESSOR: but not the actually device like HARD DRIVE or FLOPPY DRIVE, I showed it to a friend who said he never seen anything like that. Well, I took out all the IDE cards and left only the AGP card in for video. I unplugged all devices, except for Floppy and it didn't even boot to it, I hit F12 to bring up boot menu and select floppy, but same error, NO BOOT DEVICE AVAILABLE, press F1 to retry or F2 to enter setup... No Mater what I hook up in what order, the bios recognizes it, but still its not listed in the boot sequence. I can verify all cords and drives work cause I removed them and plugged them into a different computer and it booted just fine. I even installed that PCI ata card and added my 200GB hard drive, it worked great. This stupid dell though couldn't handle it or it was just its time to go. I also, on the dell, removed the battery, and had to reset the time after booting back up, but it still had the same issues. The lights on the back of the tower, the first THREE, A, B and C are GREEN, the last one is orange - D, what does this mean? Any ideas? By the way, the PCI Card, is a siig ultra ata 133 non raid card, I just wanted to use it for my Maxtor 200GB drive, but in the dell, it wont work, and it killed my bios or I killed it by repeatedly unplugging and plugging back in devices.

Reply: (edit)I noticed on your pics that the BIOS version is A01. Try installing the newest BIOS (I looked on the Dell site and it is version A09 (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8200&category=1&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=308&devlib=1). My first impression is that the BIOS version you have isn't compatible with what you are doing. Try the update and repost and tell us if the problem still persists.

Reply: (edit)Also, I looked up your LED diagnostic codes here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/codes.htm?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04 And found that it says that your green, green, green, yellow means "Other failure" so that isn't very helpful.

Reply: (edit)Well, ok, I will give it a shot, downloading bios update... done, copying to floppy... done, putting in Dell, starting up, by the way, I only have a floppy drive and the hard drive plugged in, and the graphics card, no other devices or cards are in... put in floppy, turned on computer, accesses floppy for one second, stops, hangs for about 10 seconds, during this time the a light in back is orange, then it turns green and says, no boot device available, f1 to retry or f2 for setup, I hit f2, it sees a floppy but its not in the boot sequence like the pictures show, I exit and go to boot menu, by hitting f12, I click diskette drive and again, as soon as I do, it say no boot device available, it doesnt even try the floppy drive. Bad dell, very bad!

Reply: (edit)First thing that comes to mind is that not all PCI based IDE controller cards will support optical drives. What do you mean by this statement "Bios shows boot device, boot sequence menu does not"? If all drives are not identified by model during the POST screens at startup then they are not configured correctly. You can't "kill your BIOS" by installing hardware. Avoid using the first PCI slot next to the AGP or if not AGP slot, the uppermost slot. That slot usually shares an IRQ with the AGP, which can cause conflicts. Look for a setting in your BIOS called "reset configuration data" If you have this setting, enable it for one boot cycle. This will reallocate the IRQs. This may not be available in the Dell BIOS. If you don't have that option, look for Plug and play aware OS. If currently enabled, disable. This will force the BIOS to configure the hardware. One other thing, disable any onboard hardware you don't use. Don't set to auto, disable it.

Reply: (edit)Just wanted to clarify that while first starting, the lights on the back show Orange, green, green, Orange, for about 10 seconds while the DELL screen is displayed, it seems to hang even though the progress bar is fully filled up, and then I get the no boot device screen. and the first light turns green.

Reply: (edit)Not all controller cards are bootable. The IDE cable in the 5th picture is of a 40 wire cable. You should be using 80 wire cables. Do the drives show properly during the POST screens?

Reply: (edit)Sorry, added some more pics, I believe you mean the last two pics OtheHill, I dont know much about cables but they are the original ones that came with the computer. You might be seeing the one in front of the IDE cable which is behind to the right, Primary IDE its labeled on the board. Well, I took all drives and cards out and put them in a Gateway 700C desktop and got it all to boot fine, even got the ATA 133 PCI card working fine with the Maxtor 200GB HD, then I hooked up the old hard drive from my dell, when I started the Gateway, it didn't boot up, it didn't even output anything to the monitor, the power was there, just no output to monitor, no access to any drives, could it be that my old hard drive, just by hooking it up to this computer, killed this one too? Is my old hard drive infected with a virus or has a short that ruining my motherboard? Or could it be this siig ata 133 non raid pci card again that did it. Well, I will find out soon enough, both computers are at a repair shop and set to be fixed, I will post the problems they found, of course I set limit on trouble shooting. I would rather buy a used board than have someone mess around with them for 200 dollars!

Reply: (edit)Found out whats wrong with the Gateway, I took out the C Rimm memory cards, I thought they were extra, I had the 2-256 ones in there, the other ones were not needed, I WAS WRONG, the computer wasn't starting because I took them out, and it cost 25 bucks to find that out!
