hi

i got a toshiba portege m200 off ebay for extremely cheap because it has no hard drive and a bios password the guy couldn't remember.

i always though that removing the bios battery would erase the password, but even without the battery, there's still a password!

i removed the main battery, unplugged the ac, removed the bios battery, then plugged back the ac to power it up, and there is still a password!

what do i do? if people aren't allowed to supply this info publicly on the forums, then email it to me:

winnt7(at)gmail(dot)com

thanks all!

yes, i did. should've mentioned that -_-

anyway, rather than shorting out a circuit to deplete power, i tried backdoor passwords, taking out the cmos battery, etc.

there's another thing i want to try.

i'll let ya know if it worked

toshiba won't give it to me. they say that i have to send it in.

i called where they send the laptops to, Genamation, and they charge $145.99 *o*

this is ridiculous.

here's the challenge code:

------------

what i don't understand is why removing the bios battery didn't work. i guess i could try the JOPEN1 trick

what do you think?

sorry, this is the challenge code:

KNFYC
9YA0V
69411
99GKQ
HVQ2D

-----------

this is not a "request for cracks, keycodes, copyrighted software, etc"

the two techs i spoke with at toshiba each told me that Genamation could do this over the phone, and abviously, they lied. i'm waiting for a call back from their supervisor to get this straightened out before i start shorting stuff.

The tech i spoke with at Genemation (Ennio) told me that all they do is send the email to toshiba and wait for a reply with the response code: for almost $150? forget it.

Fairly recent laptops are very well protected. You haven't been able to remove passwords on a laptop by removing the cmos battery for many years (at least 8 or so). Programs that used to work to remove passwords do not work on more recent laptops. The passwords are stored on a chip on the mboard other than the bios chip and the data on it cannot be erased by removing the power to it. You can have someone replace the chip but it probably needs to be programmed first and that procedure won't be cheap, or you can often buy yourself a used mboard for older laptops on the web for your model that has no passwords. Otherwise, you have no option but to pay the $145.99 to them or similar to some other web vendor.
......

"i got a toshiba portege m200 off ebay for extremely cheap because it has no hard drive and a bios password the guy couldn't remember"

There are lots of stolen laptops for sale. Think about it. If someone was trying to sell it what else would they say other than they couldn't remember the password? If they had to use the password every time they used the computer, they're extremely unlikely to forget it, aren't they?

Sometimes they steal a laptop and find the hard drive is passworded and they can't figure out how to fix that so they remove it, only to find the bios has a password too.
Whether or not the hard drive is accessable because it has a password on it is stored both on the chip on the mboard and on the hard drive itself. The password and drive lock info can only be removed on the same computer model or similar models that use the same method to store that "locked" info on the hard drive. If you replace the chip on the mboard the passwords were on, or replace the mboard with one that has no passwords, you still can't access the "locked" hard drive.

thanks Rayburn, the jumpers specified to be under the wireless NIC aren't there, and neither is the jumper under the ram there either.

is there a master list of challenge codes and response codes somewhere?

I didn't know that getting rid of the password would be so difficult on this model.

I guess my best option is to just go and get the password removal done for $90 (Futureshop will do it for me). Hell, after all of this, even with the extra $90 *and* buying a hard drive *and even* if I bought an extra battery for it, it's still cheaper than the other units. Other units were selling for like $500. This unit was $120 including shipping. It'll come around to under $300 altogether, which I think is pretty decent.

I'll just have to be a little more careful when shopping and a little less impulsive with my visa :D. Lesson learned :).

Next time pay attention to the Feedback rating, and how long they have been a Member.
Little or no Feedback, or a recent member, both require caution.

"unfortuneatly, it's a startup password, and i can't boot off of anything."

VERY suspicious.
If he or she had to use the password every time they used the computer, they're extremely unlikely to forget it.

Even if you had eventually figured out how to remove the password for free, your time is not really free. How much time have you spent on this so far?
