Here's the problem:

Last month I bought an ASUS CUWE (base CUWE model, here are the board stats http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2725569663&category=4614

Well, I just started try it out two weeks ago to build a computer for a friend, and ran into a problem, let me explain.

The system setup is an ASUS CUWE w/ onboard video (disabled), P3 700mhz@100FSB, 512ram (256mb 16x8chipset , and 2 pieces of 128mb 16x8 chipset both CAS lat are 3)
Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 8, nVidia GeForce2 MX-400 64mb PCI

At first, it was able to boot past the bios fine, but the only problem was that it would not detect the hard drive no matter how hard I tried to change the jumper settings, changing IDE cables, and so on - it just woulnd't detect the HD for nearly about 5 hours of tinkering. I always got past the bios detection with the HD detect on auto, but it never detected anything, therefore giving me the disk not found error upon trying to loadup. The motherboard is new, i don't really think there is a problem with it, but perhaps there may be.

So I gave up for a week, and started to try it out again today.

Now the problem I ran into today was that the system would not power up at first, so I swapped the power supply with a new extra one I had sitting around. Turned on fine, only exception now is that when I boot it up, even with the harddrive disconnected, it hangs after the 'Plug n' Play PCI enabled' display right on the Award Bios screen (the motherboard CUWE bios is updated to the latest version from asus.com)

I can't figure how to get past this, but it does feel like a simple fix I can't figure out to me. Can anyone give me any tips?

Just a quick tip. Remove the Ram and just use ONE stick to setup. If that doesn't work then clear the Bios( look in the M/B book) .

thanks! it happened to be the memory slot was somewhat picky, I changed the order and it seemed to work fine.

The only problem now, is that the computer is still not detecting the hard drive. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've already tried to manually enter the bios HD settings from maxtor's site regarding the Diamondmax Plus 8, but it still goes by undetected - the jumper is in the right position, I ensured no other ide devices would be on the cable except that drive itself, and the cable is working fine (I tested the CDROM on it). Perhaps the motherboard is too outdated to support this drive?
