Subject: BIOS Flash unreactive

Manufacturer/Model: homebrew
Comment:

I have an Asus P5A mobo and I am trying to flash the bios so that it will support a 60gb hdd. I can boot to the floppy and get aflash.exe to run but once i input the path and filename of the new bios and hit enter, the cursor just goes to the next line and blinks like it is waiting for more input. I am under the impression that the bios is write protected but I am having trouble finding which jumper i need to clear to remedy the problem. Any opinions or ideas on the matter are welcome.

So the flasher screen never comes up? What OS are you booting the computer with? For dos-type flashing the bootdisk should have just the basic system files, the flasher and the bios update. You don't want any memory management software loading.

You'd boot with the bootdisk and at the a:\> prompt type the flasher name followed by the upgrade as in
aflash upgrade.awd. With some flashers you just type in the flasher program. . .aflash. . . and then use the arrow keys to scroll to the upgrade. Other times you type in the upgrade file name after running the flasher. But in all cases the flasher screen should come up.

If the bios was write protected the flasher would probably give an error message rather than a flashing cursor. I'm inclined to think the problem is with your bootdisk.

Go here http://www.esupport.com/techsupport/award/awardutils.htm and get your right boot image. Put it on a floppy first then your flash after that. It's best to do it all on a single floppy, as any disruption can cause dissaster. I have done it with multiple disks though. Also it is very likely that you need a 98 boot image instead of one of the many current ones listed there. I've got it and can find out where it downloads from free.Set bios to boot from floppy "A" only. 1.Turn off 2.install floppy 3.turn on 4. do nothing, let it run (it might ask, but won't allow you to answer)let it completly finish 5.turn off 6. eject diskette 7. turn on 8. go in BIOS change to boot from hard drive. then install new hard drive. Sometimes if it asks to backup old BIOS it will run out of space on the floppy and fail to finish (just do it again)
