Hi, I just upgraded my Aopen AX6BC motherboard bios to Version R2.55 and now my computer won't start up to anything. I watched the bios install process and it failed (while installing). I was trying to fix a confliction with the ATI Rage 3d CII card and the processer. The computer description says I have a p3 but the device manager says I have a PII (causing the confliction) Please help!

If the machine won't boot to the floppy disk again there is little you can do except obtain a new BIOS chip from Aopen.

Can be a number of reasons !!

Wrong flash procedure
Wrong bios type for your mother board.
The bios was write protected.

Did you back up the original bios ??
What method did you use to flash the rom ??
Dos based or inbuilt flash utility ??
Did you set the bios back to original deafult settings before flashing ??

Did you try reseting the CMOS to see if this may reset the bios back to the original factory settings. ???

"How come the update wrecked my bios in the first place?"

1. you did it wrong

2. you used the wrong BIOS file (possibly from the wrong model board?)

3. bad download - your new BIOS file was corrupt

Those are a few possibilities.

Did you try resetting the BIOS by using the ClearCMOS jumper while the system is unplugged?

If that doesn't work, does the board have an ISA slot? do you have an old ISA video card laying around? you may be able to bring up the display with an ISA card, then try reflashing the BIOS. Onboard video might work too.

Format a floppy, then transfer the new BIOS file (download it again) & flash utility to it. Boot off the Win98 boot floppy & select "without CD support"...when it stops at the A:\> prompt, take it out & insert the BIOS floppy. Type the name of the flash file (without the .exe), hit ENTER, & follow the instructions

I tried the ClearCMOS jumper to no effect. I also don't have another video card. When I installed the new BIOS I had 2 files: AX6BC255.exe & AX6BC255.bin. I put those 2 files in a temp directory in c:\ by themselves. Then I restarted to a command prompt only. Then I executed the .exe file. The flash process started and in the progress bar it failed the whole way then restarted to absolutly nothing (except for power being on) then eventually shut itself off. So now I can't hit the Del button or boot off a floppy. How hard is it to get a replacement bios chip (assuming it will even come out)?

The fact that you cant boot the pc att all in fact suggest that you may have killed the bios flash rom.

If its a socketed bios you should be able to gat another one form the manufacturer.

Any good pc shop should be able to do this for you.

If you can down load the original version of the bios from the web site, together with the flash utility and place it on a bootable floppy drive.

And if you can do this it may allow you to reflash the rom.

For new BIOS ROM try here.

http://www.badflash.com/

Next time you update a BIOS do it from a bootable floppy with just the two basic DOS files, IO.SYS and MS-DOS SYS on it. Booting to a C: prompt from the hard disk could have been what caused the problem in the first place.

All you need is the bare minimum to get the computer going. No memory managers, no Autoexec.bat and no Config.sys.

You definitely performed the flash wrong. It should be done from pure DOS mode...not from the command prompt. I explained the method in response # 4. It also appears you flashed to an old BIOS instead of the latest & greatest.

Version R2.55 is dated 7/25/2002...the latest BIOS is R2.59 & is dated 2/5/2003. Generally when you "update" your BIOS, you go for the very latest available.

BTW, a new BIOS chip will cost more than that old board is worth.

I just bought a bios chip off ebay for $25 CAN. They said they would flash it to version 2.59 for free. If I didn't get it on ebay it would have not been worth it.
