Comment:

I removed my HSF and CPU to reapply some Arctic Silver III thermal grease, and when I reinstalled them both and booted, my BIOS settings were back to default.

Was this supposed to happen?

Thanks,

Dre

I don't think so. Did you unplug the AC power before removing the CPU?

I always use a grounding wrist strap and unplug the power cord to my PC before touching anything inside.

I set my BIOS settings back to my preferences, and everything seems to be okay for the past 2 days, no glitches or crashes or slowdowns, etc.

I just thought BIOS settings were held by the battery on the mobo. Maybe I'll replace that battery just to be sure.

I don't think it's the battery because it would have been a very big coincidence with changing the cpu if it never happened before or since then.
But changing it doesn't hurt besides the cost for a new one!

Is it possible that you shortcut the clear CMOS contacts or pins without realising it while working on the board ???
It would be an explaination. Or it's an security feature of the board.

Just curious...what did you have, a thermal pad? any significant change in temps since applying AS-3?

Hmmm, might of touched/shorted something by accident... well, it's still running w/ no problems, so I'm happy.

I had just the original Intel HSF, it has a thin aluminum like contact surface. There was some blackish grease when I first took it off, so I applied some ASIII.

As far as temps, probably dropped maybe 2 degrees C. Not much, but every bit helps.

Thanks to all for their comments.
