Comment: hi, my psu just blew up today. crackled and shutdown when i tried to turn my computer on. did some testing and saw that when i flipped the rocker switch on the psu from off to on, the mobo light turned on and slowly faded to off. unplugged it and sent it back for RMA. currently, am using a 430watt thermaltake. everything boots up fine, but it gets stuck at the Windows XP page. i can get into bios alrite, and it POSTs. but it wont get past the WINDOWS XP screen... whats the matter? i tried pulling my RAM and testing each one but still the same. tried Windows Safe mode too. please help fast! ty

Reply: (edit)When a PSU goes bad it can damage other hardware. Could be some damage to the Harddrive or maybe just corrupt files on the drive. I suggest you run a drive fitness test. DLoad from the drive manufacturer of the HDrive. Watch the POST screens to verify all hardware and RAM is properly identified. If the drive and POST check out you may want to try a Windows repair.

Reply: (edit)Try a windows or Linux live cd,if it doesn't start up then the mb is damaged......mb powers directly from psu so it's sensible to shorts circuits

Reply: (edit)hey, back again. i ended up running knoppix off cd and it booted up fine. so im hoping that all components are in good order. im not too well versed in linux, but i do know how to pull files from a dead windows drive :) took forever to move stuff with the only fat32 drive in my posession- a 1gb flash drive. i hope its just corrupted data or something. ive got everything i need so im just going to reformat. its the easiest thing for me and im too lazy to troubleshoot anymore. i need it up and running like now lol.

Reply: (edit)Try to repair windows. Boot to the CD and select Repair. Shouldn't affect any of your files. Power surge probably just corrupted some files.

Reply: (edit)hey, i reformatted. i was just getting things back to normal, and after a required restart from windows updates, i got problems again. this time, it POSTs and then restarts. i ran windows repair on my C drive and chkdsk came back with one or more errors. i then did fixboot but that did nothing. what else do i do?
