Subject: Big, huge, monitor problem
OS: Windows ME
CPU/Ram: 1000mhz/256Mb

I have never experienced this before! Basically, I was on my computer, the image on the monitor started becoming skewed, and then it shut itself off. The monitor seemed to make repeated attempts to turn itself on but nothing happens. I don't know if it's a monitor problem, or video card, or cpu. When I reboot the computer, I can see all the regular BIOS information, then I see the "windows ME" screen, then the monitor shuts itself off, and again tries to turn itself on, and again nothing happens. The monitor seems to work in Safe Mode though. I tried to update my video driver and it sort of worked for about a minute (however the image was fuzzy and in a weird shape) then the monitor turned itself off and it started to smell like burnt plastic. i have no idea what's going on, and I am at a complete loss. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou
Micronean

Sounds like your video card ate its ram. What kind of video card is it? If it has one, check and see if the Viedo card fan is still spinning.

Sounds like a dingo ate your baby, I'd get the hell out of Australia!

Anyway, do you have another monitor to test? Or another computer to test the monitor on?

It sounds like its the monitor, if it were the video card I would think it would still be bad in safe mode/at bootup. It sounds like the monitor is having problems at whatever resolution you run at, and when you're first booting up or in safe mode its a lower resolution.. Try running at a lower resolution and set the refresh rate to a low setting (like 60hz).

Sounds like you need a new monitor but like I said, its hard to diagnose unless you have another monitor to test if its the video card, or another pc to test if its the monitor.
