Subject: better CPU or mobo with DDR OS: XP CPU/Ram: 1,33ghz/384 pc133

Comment: I have a 1,33ghz Thunderbird (266 fsb) running at 1,4ghz on a MSI KT7 Turbo2 with an ATI 8500LE 64 DDR and 384 megs of pc133. Cause i'm in a low budget, i want to know what i have do to first, between upgrading my cpu or buying a mobo who support ddr ram. I just want to obtain better fps in 3d games. For now i obtain 7600 in 3dmark 2001se and i want do have better score. I know my mobo support up to 2600+ Athlon XP but doesn't support DDR. So my choice is between a new MSI KT3 mobo with 384 or 512 DDR333 or a new CPU like an Athlon XP 2000+ or 2100+. Ultimatly i'll buy the two, but with my budget i just can buy one for now, so what's the more important to obtain better performance ?

Reply: (edit)Upgrade your CPU first if your board will accept an XP CPU. If no support for the Athlon XP CPU, upgrade motherboard and memory first, and use your tbird until you can get your hands on a good CPU. Best bet on a cheap XP CPU would be a 1700+ or 1800+ for ~$50-$60. Best bet on a decent/full featured mobo would be the EPoX 8RDA+ at ~$105. When purchasing memory, get QUALITY MEMORY, preferrably PC2700 or above, to allow the best stability and upgradability in the future.

Reply: (edit)It depends on what you mean by "low budget". Obviously a new CPU is gonna be a lot cheaper than a mobo/CPU/DDR memory. The latest BIOS for your board adds support up to an XP2600+. The XP2100+ is selling at pricewatch for $81...XP2200+ & above are considerably more. Upping your RAM to 512mb might help...PC133 is cheap these days. A new videocard is a possibilty too. Personally, I like the 8500, but a GF4 Ti4200 would probably bring that score up quite a bit. My question(s) to you is this: are your games running poorly or are you just concerned with your 3D Mark score? If everything is running OK, it seems to me it would be a waste of money just to up your score...what's the point? Bragging rights? Have a look at this comparison at Tom's Hardware. He got a score of 9723 with a P4 3.06Ghz/512mb DDR. It seems to me that you're doing pretty good with what you have. http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20021218/vgacharts-05.html
