Well I'm going to try to connect the bad SATA drive (its unbootable, but nto physically damaged) to another system to see if I can recover my data.

Are there any well known or best programs for this?

Thanks.

PC Inspector

Zero assumption Recovery
http://www.z-a-recovery.com
The demo is limited
It will only recover'up to' four folders per run
But you can make multiple runs

Ontrack's 'Easy Recovery'

Is the drive properly identified by model number in the startup screens. If so, I would try using Knoppix to copy your files. Worst case, Knoppix is free and useful in the future. Knoppix is a live version of Linux. It installs to and runs from one CDR. Knoppix can configure your hardware and access any media available. Network, external drive, flash drive. Burner if you happen to have two optical drives (need one to run Knoppix). Knoppix is a 700MB download. Google for Knoppix.

Will Knoppix work if there are bad sectors on the hard drive?

If there are intact files it MAY work. Knoppix doesn't rely on the file system Windows uses to find the files.

File Scavenger as mentioned in response 1.
Best recovery program I ever used....I tried GetDataBack (NOT GOOD) and a few others. Try Scavengers free trial and see what is on your HD. You'll have to pay for it to retrieve your Data, but it has been worth it to me.

Some HELP in posting on Cnet plus free progs and instructions Glad to Help!
