OS: All
CPU/Ram: Pentium MMX 233MHz, 384MB
Product: ASUS P5A
Comment:

I need an old computer to use some old hardware and run my old stuff. I have been using an ASUS P2B-F motherboard until suddenly the BIOS settings messed up and now I cannot use my Vibra 16 sound card under DOS programs at all. I have an ASUS P5A revision 1.06 motherboard which I tried using the sound card with and I want to use for my old system. The problem is that the best socket 7 processor I have is a Pentium MMX 233MHz which is a very weak processor.

What is the most powerful processor that can run under ASUS P5A motherboard?

I heard that the K6 processors have some problems when running Windows '95 and Windows NT. Is there any update for those OSes that can fix this problem?

If you look at the specs & do the math, you *should* be able to run a K6-2/500MHz, possibly a 550MHz if you overclock (5 x 110MHz).

To install Win95 with a K6-2 system, you'd 1st have to underclock the CPU to a speed below 350MHz, then install Win95, then install the K6-2 patch (if you can still find it). After patching, you can reclock the CPU above 350MHz.

If your 233MMX is unlocked, try clocking it at 250MHz (2.5 x 100MHz) so that you're at least running with the faster FSB.

I think it will be much better to intall Windows '95 using the Pentium MMX processor first and after patching the OS to install the K6.

I'm not into overclocking because it shortens the system lifespan.

Will 550MHz K6-3 processor work on this motherboard?

I will try to get one. The K6-3 550MHz are extremely rare. The K6-2 550MHz processors are much easier to find.

Could be wrong, but I don't think AMD made a K6-3 550.

There is K6-3 550MHz. It is calle K6-3E+ and it's rare. I'm not sure I will ever find one and even if I do, I don't even know if the P5A supports this processor. The K6-3E+ 550MHz is the fastest and most powerful Socket 7 processor.

But it's still just a socket 7. Pricewise it's silly to spend the money on a K6-3 when you could spend less on a slot 1 motherboard with a P-III.

I have 2 Slot 1 motherboards. I want to use an ISA Vibra 16 sound card on this computer but slot 1 mobos do a lot of trouble with ISA PnP sound cards. They cannot be used under DOS due to invalid or conflicting IRQ (a BIOS problem) or they make a lot of noise (especially the newest ones) in one or both channels.

So because you don't know how to properly configure the BIOS for your P2 board you wanna build a new (old) system just to use the old ISA soundcard?

I know it looks strange, but I need that sound card to run old music programs. I need to record my old music stuff and I need a real computer because emulators cannot do the job as well as a real machine.

If you plan on using the socket 7 board then I'd suggest you start off with a K6-2 and keep an eye out for a cheap K6-3. The K6-2 should be enough for your needs so getting the K6-3 wouldn't be a high priority and you could wait for a good deal. I've got several K6-2 in the 500 mhz range if you can't find any locally.
