Any CPU will do. Neither downloading from the Internet or burning a CD put any great strain on any CPU, even a Pentium III will do.

But what happens is tht when i use multiple application like IDM and mozilla my machine freezes and if i write a dvd at the same time everything becomes very very slow. so i wanted to upgrade which will allow me to multitask with all these operations...

There fore wanted to knw which processor will be the best.....i have 512 mb ram but will add another 512 mb soon...

If you machine freezes for any reason you need to be looking at something else other than a faster CPU. There is something else going on. If you machine freezes while using IDM and Mozilla then you need to be looking at your Internet connection. You may be wasting money trying to solve a problem that is outside your control.

Doing anything else when burning a CD is fraught with problems, regardless of how fast a CPU you have. Burning a CD is time critical operation as there has to be a constant and un-interrupted data flow. Any interruption in the data flow can render the disk useless so the burning software will grab any resources that are available. Most of this data flow is off-loaded on to the DMA controller on the motherboard. This can make it appear as if the computer has frozen, it will certainly slow other operations down. CD burning and multi-tasking just do not go together.

You will find an improvement by installing more memory which is what I would go for first. Burning CDs and downloading with only 512 Mgbs of RAM is just asking for trouble.

Right now Core 2 duo's are the best at handling multi-processes, but AMD Athlon X2's are cheaper and perform well for the price.

2gb of ram is better especially if you are going to be running Vista. plus DDR2 2gb of ram is extremly cheap like less then 40 dollars right now cheap.

It would help to know what CPU you currently have, but you definitely need more RAM.

As said above downloading and burning discs does not need a high performance system. Something else is probably slowing down your system.

Hi Everybody,

Stuart my internet connection is fine... no problems with that...because when i just download it works fine...its just the multitasking part that fails...what i possibly think is that my motherboard is heating up somewhere...Thanks for your help...u have a lot of good information.

Cobra - yes thats what i was thinking...i may go in for core 2 2.6 ghz with 2 gb ram....i dont kow abt the states but its costly in india...so my dads gonna kick my ass for that....lol

Jam - yes i i thk that too...but i thk i will replace the board as well as upgrade the ram...cheers

Aegis- probably something related to the board..i have a intel P3-celeron with 512 ram ...so lets see how it goes....
