beeping external harddrive; recover data?

I've got a Seagate 320gb external hard drive that I bought with the intention of backing up everything on my laptop to keep all my files safe and sound. Problem is my external hard drive doesn't work now. Like any sane person, because I've lost access to all my videos, pictures, music, and documents, I'm a little frustrated and desperate to say the least. When I plug the hard drive in it beeps. It doesn't click, it beeps. I talked to a guy at a computer store and he was convinced my information was safe, but the external hard drive was busted and that all i needed to do was buy a hard drive enclosure and use it to access the files on my old external. However, despite the new enclosure, the beeping persists and I am increasingly skeptical that I will get my files back or trust technology ever again. Any help you might offer would be hugely and sincerely appreciated.

Any luck? I have the same external hard from the sounds of it. Seagate, 320 gb. I need to recover the data off of it atleast. I use it to work off of two different computers, and it hasn't been backed up for a week. Any help on recovering the data would be greatly appreciated.
