Sorry everybody for the long text but i must be clear.

I have a P4P800 deluxe

Recently as some of you might know, a lot of problems happens to it.

I could not pinpoint the cause until now.

Even after formatting, all my usb ports cease to function causing a "device not recognized" error.

Since it was still under warranty i return it to the store for deeper checking. They told me that everything was fine now, they dissasembled the computer completely and re-build it. They did not know the real cause of the malfunction.

Yes everything was fine back home, but when i started to re-install everything i own that use a usb port, The error message appear when i pluggeg my USB ACOM DATA COMPACT FLASH READER.

All of the sudden my usb printer and usb scanner that were working perfectly a few seconds ago went dead.

So i'm doomed again. How can a so simple device can cause dammages to ALL 8 of my other usb ports ???

Anyone know how to solve this hardware problem ?

Thanks a lot !!!

Zenno.

By any chance, is your USB ACOM DATA COMPACT FLASH READER a USB 2.0 device?

I don't know.

If that's the case, can it be possible that my computer do not support it ? It's a P4 3.0 Prescott.

If that was the problem all this time, grrr, how really really really stupid of me.

Hold on, i'll check.

USB is backwards and forward compatable. But I had 2.0 and 1.1 devices running on an integral USB 2.0 card, and the 2.0 device stopped working and could not be found when the 1.1 devices were installed. You could possibly be having the same problem.

Hmmm, on their web site, my reader is listed but no mention for this particular model if it's usb 2.0

Anyway, i have a cd that came with the motherboard to install USB 2.0 driver. But it refused to install mentionning that i have Windows XP SP1 and therefore it was not necessary.

On my other computer which is a little older, i never had any problem reading or writing to the device in question.

So the question that comes to my mind is, is it necessary for a recent computer like mine to do an "upgrade" in order to be able to use usb 2.0 ?

Thanks !

Also, just back from the manufacturer's web site of my other devices, printer (canon), scanner (agfa) and mouse (microsoft), again they don't tell in the spec what type of USB.

I tried a system restore to before i plugged in my reader, but my usb port are still dead.

No need to mention that during all these testings, my reader was UNPLUGGED.

I just want the other usb ports to be in working order again. At this point just buying a new reader will not solve my problem.

One last thing, my motherboard user manual is stating that it's onboard usb port are 2.0

How should i know if the ones i have on the case and on the usb add-on card are 2.0 as well ?

In my case, I had a USB 2.0 scanner. I had to buy a USB 2.0 PCI card. I installed the scanner on the PCI card, and all 1.1 devices on the onboard USB 2.0. After separating the 2.0 and 1.1 devices, my problems went away. I'm not saying this is what's happening to you, but it might be.

I believe an external usb hub will prevent this damage. I just received my 3rd p4c800e deluxe motherboard and it was working fine for several hours and then I docked my hp jornada handheld. Just as it docked, all my usb ports stopped working and the only fix that I know is to get a replacement motherboard from asus, and this will be the 4th. This time I am going to connect through a external usb hub and hopefully this will prevent this from happening again.
