bd/dvd drive wont read written discs

Hi All,

I have an ASUS X64JQ (aka N61JQ) with an HL-DT-BDDVDRW CT21N optical drive.
The drive should write to cd's and dvd's but only read Blu-Ray discs.
The problem I have is that the drive will recognise factory discs but not any written disc.
Written discs show up as blank media and the win 7 wizard asks me what I want to burn to them!
Win Explorer shows the drive as BD-Rom Drive (D:) and any disk its type and size
(ie CD-R 702, DVD-R 4.38 and DVD+R 4.37 etc.)

Having a look at driver details it only lists CDROM.SYS, This is the win 7 64 bit driver.

I have the latest drivers and am awaiting a response from ASUS.

My last laptop had a similar problem which turned out to be the laser failing.
But this laptop is only 8 months old and the drive hardly used.

This feels to me like a software issue

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

For anyone out there with similar problems...

I found that the drive is at fault.

I booted the laptop with a bootable CDR that works on other PC's the drive did not recognise it but will recognise the manufacturer discs that came with the laptop.
This indicates that either the drive has electronic issues or that the laser is just too weak.

I consider this issue closed and am awaiting a response from ASUS.
