Can I solve this by updating bios? If so how can I check update/install bios update?

Try this and if it fails, return the unit.

Turn off the computer and close the lid. Be sure the battery is installed and plug in the ac adapter. Let it sit for 10 hours.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

I kept the charger plugged in for 10 hrs with the laptop shutdown and lid closed, but after 10 hrs when I switch it ON it says the same thing "battery plugged in not charging".

The adapter powers the laptop without the battery(ie if i remove the battery) as long as there is supply coming in but that will not solve the problem.

How to get the charge into the battery?

It may be that the reporting system was slow. Most owners manuals say to power it up for a very long time. I think I have seen 24 hours in one laptop.

It doesn't charge because you have power management limits set that say begin charging at a certain percentage battery level and stop charging at a certain higher battery charge percentage. Your battery just didn't get down to the lower level so the charge did not commence. Just check the Lenovo power options setting and change the lower limit or let the battery discharge below the lower limit and then plug in the power jack.
