Battery on laptop?

Hi guys, Just a quick question.
I have a Compaq Evo N400c laptop, the battery doesn't hold ANY charge at all! It will fire up fine with the AC adaptor!
However when I plug the battery in and fire up with the AC, then go into BIOS and then Calibrate Battery it shows the battery charging at 97% (but won't calibrate it)
Is this a battery fault??? I don't want to buy a new battery if it isn't!
By the way I haven't installed any OS yet so I can't say what the windows battery meter is saying.

Sorry I forgot to add - it is the main battery and not the handle battery.
Also, when I try and charge the battery, the orange charging light does come on! It just doesn't charge.
Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,
When you have the battery and the AC adapter on the laptop, have you tried to remove the battery and reconnect the battery while the laptop is powered on?
If so, you may have shorted the battery.
After you powered on the laptop with both AC and battery, please tried remove the AC and see if the system still remain powered on by battery alone. (Do not do this in BIOS screen.)
If your battery cannot keep the system ON this way, you may need to use other battery.
