I have had a Gateway laptop for two or more years now, and it has always worked fine, but today, I had plugged it in and it started charging normally, but then a few minutes later -- while still plugged in -- it stopped charging. It just stopped. The battery died and is still dead, and I took the battery out and put it back in and plugged it in again, it wouldn't charge. So, my laptop's useless.

Anyone know what's going on?

Usually the power supply will have power indicator light on it. Is that on? Not on the computer but the cable itself. Could be a short in the cable or it could have just died. Most likely it's the cable.
