Battery not accepting a charge

Just had this laptop returned with new motherboard and new battery. Both genuine Sony parts, battery is correct model number. Battery won't accept charge.
Sony support says the BIOS needs to be flashed to recognize the battery - they will do it for me but I need to send them the laptop. I can't do that, for a number of reasons, so can I flash the BIOS myself?
Machine works perfectly on mains power, the only problem is the battery won't accept a charge. Before it ran down the machine worked perfectly on battery power.

Did an authorized Sony service center do the work? If so send it back and have them fix it.

It was Sony that did it. Unfortunately it took them 6 weeks - machine was returned to me after 2 weeks, with a fault (not the same 1 I sent it in for.) Sent it back to them, 4 weeks later it came back with this fault.
So Sony has seen the last of me and my money, which is a pity because the machine itself is excellent.
