I have an OLD Dell with a PIII-650 that gets 4 hours routinely on a charge that takes 1 hour. It does use speedstep, but I think as the processors have gotten faster and the OS more demanding, the battery life cannot help but suffer.

You may just want to invest in a second (or third) battery to carry with you. It would probably be cheaper than a different processor and be much more satisfying.

1.5-2.0 hrs is normal. If you want more time, buy a battery with more cells in it.

Or switch to desktop whose PSU life is measured in years rather than hour :-)

I took the liberty of rewriting this post so that I can understand it.

Hey guys!!

I've got an Acer Travelmate 2305LCi which has exceeded my expections for a budget notebook. It's a full sized notebook but I still want to take it with me on coaches, trains and planes. However, the battery life is very poor, worse than on my old system. The laptop has a Celeron M 360 in it which is essentially a Pentium M banias with speedstep disabled. I want to improve my battery life to at least around the 4 hour mark if posible. At the moment I get on average 1.30-2 hrs.

My question is, can I put a Pentium M Or Pentium 4-M into this laptop? It has a 852GM and will this (change) improve battery life? I have checked and the processor is removable in a socket 479. Also, I will upgrade the ram to 512mb pc2700 to make performance a bit better.

(Thanks for) any help guys.

Bad news:
Your chipset doesn´t support Pentium-M, which would be the only processor to actually save your batterypower a tiny little (maybe) ;)

Good news: You can upgrade RAM !
Just be sure its exactly the same stuff you already have inside the laptop, because those b---tardos are very fast to deny your warranty in case of problems afterwards.

I sure my chipset will support th PENTIUM M processor because the celeron M 360 is a Pentium M dothan with Half Cache 1MB opposed to 2MB and the speedstep disabled as for the post before sorry i have made a mistake the processor socket is 478 fc-pga so i have bought a pentium M 1.4ghz banias 1mb cache speedstep processor just hope it works now thanks for the help but th question hasn't been answer will my battery life be at least 3-4 hours as apposed to 1-2?

Let us know how that works out please. I think the money was not well spent, but it's your money. I predict minimal battery improvement.

It's got to do with your motherboard design, not just what processors are similar. I bet if Acer could have used it and it was cheaper they would have.

If you were to do some googling, you'd find the average battery life for your machine is 2 hrs. It uses a 4-cell battery...if you wanna extend the useable time, buy a battery with more cells.

"Four-cell lithium ion battery: up to 2.0 hours life depending on configuration and usage"

"2 hours battery life; (actual battery life may vary, depending on usage and configuration)"

And if the 852GM chipset supports the Pentium, why isn't that mentioned in Intel's product description?

They Guys thanks for everyone's contributions, I got the Pentium M 1.5Ghz 1MB Cache Banias With Speedstep Technology. It was easy to install and booted straight away my inital boot up logo changed from intel inside celeron M to Intel Pentium M success! Anyways as for battery life NHC and Windows AC management both say 2hours 58minutes and my battery is 80% i'm happy also there is a noticable boost in preformance when play games and loading applications also i do wonder why the intel 852gm hasn't got Pentium M support lists. Oh yeah! one last thing what's the maximum Pentium M i can use in it i know the sonama, the newest Pentium M needs a Intel 915 or above what about the dothan will that be supported thanks! at the moment ordering a 6-cell battery and extra 512mb pc2700 to total 768mb thanks everyone once again. What i think is Acer have tweaked the motherboard as my Intel Extreme 2 Mobile Graphics Are Stated At 133Mhz On The Intel 852GM Where As In Windows And Benchmark Tools It Is Reported At 233Mhz and at the moment strange isn't it!

Heyyy, glad to hear it was recognised ok :)

It´s really hard to answer your question about supported Processors for 852GM, since even the one you have in isn´t supported, according to Intel.

This seems very interesting, but I don´t really have time to dig, so if you ever find out why it isn´t supported, please let us know!
