I have an old 730MB drive with nothing on it, it has been recently formatted, when it was being formatted with the Windows 95 start up, there seemed to be bad sectors, and when I used scan disk, it found even more. What are bad sectors, what causes them? Can the problem be fixed or is it physical damage?

A few bad sectors are ok.
When they begin to breed, it is a sign that the hdd is beginning to fail and should be binned soonest.
Try formatting with Dos command FORMAT, using /U /C options.
The /C option tests bad blocks and if they are ok, resets them as good.
Good Luck - Keep us posted.

They are physical defects on the platters. They can be defects in the manufacturing process which is usually not a problem. However they can also be caused by head to platter contact. This is not good and usually quickly escalates until the drive is completely destroyed.
