Bad RAM that cannot be replaced!

OS: Windows XP (32-bit)
CPU/Ram: Pentium II-366/256mb
Comment:

I have a Thinkpad 600E that has 32mb of RAM soldered onto the system board.

According to memory tests, part of it has gone bad (at address 0009f930). Whenever this bad RAM is accessed it causes a blue screen crash.

Replacing the system board would cost more than the laptop itself (and the system is out of warranty), so unfortunately that is not a practical option.

Is there a way I can prevent my OS (Win XP) from ever accessing this bad memory?

Or, has anyone ever tried replacing RAM chips that are soldered to the system board?

hmmm well you could try assigning the 32mb to the graphics, but to be honest it sounds like dustbin time

I agree with Rocky, it looks like dustbin time. You might try assigning this bad area of memory to a unused device.

De-soldering and re-soldering memory chips is a non-starter, that's even if you could find suitable chips to replace them with. When you consider the the chips where put there by a machine in the first place, its going to be impossible to do it by hand.

Has it crossed your mind you can get another system board for it. You can try eBay for a used one first.

Thanks for the tips guys. I will look on eBay for a system board.

Though, one last shot in the dark: what if I remove the RAM from the system board and do not replace it (which is pretty easy, it's the soldering new RAM on that's hard to do). Will this have no adverse effects on the PC, just as taking out removable DIMM chips from the memory slots would?
