My laptop display when blank in the middle of Windows the other day. I powered it off and rebooted, got the power light, but no BIOS screen. I suspected RAM, so I removed a Module A from Slot 1. It restarted fine. I shutdown and removed Module B and put it in Slot 1, leaving Slot 2 empty. Power light but no BIOS again. I then put Module A into Slot 2, leaving Slot 1 empty. Booted fine. Conclusion: RAM modules OK--I only have trouble when there's a module in Slot 1. Slot 1 bad? Do I have to replace the MOBO?

reset the bios and see if that may help...RAM slots rarely go bad, but even so, maybe you hit the bad luck lottery

I flashed my BIOS with the latest Phoenix update, but still have the same prob. If I put a module in Slot 1 and apply a small amount of pressure to it while powering on, then it boots fine, but if I let go, eventually my screen goes blank. So, I think it's just a contact issue between the module and the slot. I put a thin piece of packing foam on top of the module and put the cover back on. The little extra pressure on the module seems to work. Not the most ideal fix, I suppose, but better than a new MOBO. Thanks for the help.

watch for heat off the chip. you may melt foam on the chip and ruin your stick of RAM. is the computer still warrentied?

Good point about the foam. Any other ideas how to fix it?

No warranty anymore...it's about 3 years old.

a small peice of plastic from like a child's toy. something heat resistant and nonconductive. if you've got a little sibling, wait for them to break a toy! widdle it with a hobby knife to get it to thickness and shape and superglue it to the cover for the RAM. just like it was made for it!
