For some info about replacing a voltage inverter or backlight, and what some typical symptoms are, see response 5 in this:

I am having the same problem with the back light for a VARbook. Only difference I don't see any orange before the screen goes dim. I have check the power chord, pulled the old battery and put in a new one, pulled the memory and reseated memory, pulled the hard drive and reseated the HD.Blew out the fan for dust. When I put everything back together i got a series of beeps. 1 111 111 1.
Anyone have any ideas.
thanks,
Samantha

A common symptom of a defective voltage inverter or a failing backlight is a very dim display then blackness - what is happening is the voltage inverter is turning itself off.

I have no idea what manufacturer actually made your varbook, and the parent site has no manuals.
You could try emailing them.

If the laptop has an external video port (a 15 pin D shaped port) you could try connecting an external monitor to it.

If you installed ram that wasn't in the laptop when it previously worked, try removing it and installing the original ram.
Always remove the main battery and AC to DC adapter whenever you remove or install ram or the hard drive.
