This is the error message I get when I try to bring up Winamp.

"DirectSound outpout V2.2.6 error
Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select
another device in configuration. Error code:88780078"

(audio on Bios not disabled, not muted, nothing wrong with the speaker)
I don't see the little speak icon on the lower right bottom.(used to be there)

I reinstalled the sound driver and that doesn't help.

My computer only makes "bleep" noise.(for all occasions)

Could you please give me any advice?

Here's an answer I've found:

***

First: I downloaded the latest version of sound driver (in my case that was Realtek Ac'97 5.10.0.5420). I installed it as always after restart still having Bad DirectSound pb.
Second: I downloaded totally new ISO windows Xp pro + SP1 file and burned totally new CD.
Third: I reinstalled Windows (updating mode). During the process I received Java msg asking for a pathway of Sound Driver - though i pointed to folder's Realtek Ac'97 5.10.0.5420 main file.
Fourth: Voila! No PROBLEM already 2 weeks.

***

Haven't tried it for myself yet...

Boot to Safe Mode, and remove the drivers. Reboot and let windows reinstall them. Make sure you have the drivers ready.
