Backup utility using Flash Drive

October 15, 2011 at 17:51:15
Specs: Windows XP PRO, 512 RAM
XP Pro - using Backup wizard, when almost done using Flash drive, got message "Insert media: this tape is of the same media. Please insert a different tape."

What is tape? I have a 16GB drive, backing up 10GB of data so logically I have enough room on the Flash-??

Thanks very much.

It sounds like you already have a copy of a back up on the drive, and it does not want to overwrite it. If there is an older back up, either delete it or rename it.
Also look over the back up options, somehow the back up software is expecting a removable tape drive (USB flash drives are listed under 'removable media'), try different settings, especially tell it to keep multiple copies of the back up.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thank you very much for your response.

I checked the location and it is my E drive and under properties I see [only] 3.99GB.

This is a drive I bought just to primarily backup C drive and the first time I am attempting this so no, there are no backups on it. I don't know how to proceed. Do I start the wizard all over? And, what does the message mean by 'tape'?

I am fearful of going further without knowing what I don't know....

Thnks for any input.

We'd need to know what that backup wizard is. Most older backup programs were made to run on real tape type backup devices. Old movies with those big reel to reel tapes were the way backups were done. They never changed the programs in some cases to reflect the words.

I am referring to Windows XP Pro Backup and Restore in System Tools.

Perhaps I'd be better of manually backing up Windows files? I am aiming to have a means to restore the system in case of a crash. (I have my important data files backed up.)

Thank you.
