Backlight cable severed

June 29, 2009 at 15:25:15
Specs: Windows XP
Kind of a long story but,
The touchpad went out on my brother in-law's laptop he bought from my company 1.5 years ago. I took the machine apart and found a Burnt Chip. Removed the cable that connects the pad to the MB and reasembled it.
It turned on, but no screen, and the fans stopped after a couple seconds of running.
Took it apart again and found the backlight cable got partially severed by the frame when reasembling. (4 out of 6 wires were cut)
I tried splicing the wires together but still no video output and the fans turn off after 5 seconds.
Could the motherboard have been damaged?

How did you splice the wires together?

Whatever caused the chip to burn in the first place could've damaged the motherboard too.
