AVI DVD Players?

DVD video by definition isn't AVI.

Yes, some do if the AVI is using a DIVX or XVID codec.

AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave and there are probably 20 or so different codecs that are used for AVI's. It's not like there is just one codec for the AVI format.
