Audio Lag and Hardware Help

September 13, 2012 at 06:05:51
Specs: Windows XP
Occasionally, a song that I play on itunes, lags... or pauses for a split second then resumes. Does anyone know what hardware component this would be attributed to? Hard drive? Memory? CPU?

Also, can anyone give me a general explanation of how the audio is processed and by which hardware component? For example, is the audio playing back from the hard drive? or is it the RAM? And, is the CPU reading it, etc? Which component would you say is most important for reducing audio lag? latency issues?

Does the lag happen with any other program besides iTunes? Test it with Windows Media Player or Winamp. That way you can determine if it's an iTunes problem or if it's something else.

Let's assume it's not itunes. I was more interested in understanding how audio is processed in the hardware, and what might be a bottleneck for audio playback

How can anyone answer that? You didn't list your specs. Could be weak specs, or your system is infected, or you have too much crap loaded & running in the background. And it doesn't help that you use iTunes - is listening to music thru that piece of crapware really necessary? If not, get rid of it.
