hi,
just a quickie, ive removed the soundcard from my pc but it still has a modem card with loudspeaker & mic sockets.
can i still play audio through this, cos everytime i try - media player gives 'there is no audio hardware present or functioning' error.

NO.
The modem speaker is for the modem... if you hear a different dial tone there could be a problem.
I think you can use headphones in the CD drive headphone socket.
