Audio Drivers

Dell Dimension 4600 desktop

Specs: Windows XP
i just did a complete restore of my old dell
dimension 4600 pc. its an older model with all
black case and such. anywho i just reinstalled
windows XP and updated it to service pack 3
and everything except my audio works. in
device manager it says driver for mutli-media
audio controller not installed (28) I tried
installing it automatically and it failed. i haven't
installed any other sound card its just OEM
audio Realtek i believe (apologies for my
ignorance). i don't have the OEM driver disk for
audio and everytime i try to download it off
dell's website it crashes my computer :( any

You have to know which audio device you have. Dell lists several different audio drivers for the Dimension 4600.

I had a couple of those. They came with on-board sound but in both the ones I had the on-board was disabled and a creative card was used.

Find out which setup you have. Make sure the on-board is disabled in cmos/bios setup if you have the card. Then download the correct drivers. The creative drivers are there too.
