Comment:

As I was installing the Multimedia center I get this error message:

ATI DVD DECODER was not detected on your system.

DVD will not be installed.

The result is that I cannot capture or record.

Can anybody help me with this?

Thanks.

A DVD decoder has nothing to do with capturing video. That message has nothing to do with your recording problem.

Start looking elsewhere. Maybe the manual?

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!

First of all you need the cd that came with the aiw card to install DVD decoder. You can't do the job with the update you download from ATI.

Secondly, ham is correct. The manual is downloadable from ATI if you don't have the original documentation or install cd.

Also you do not have to use ATI's Decoder, you can use Intervideo WinDVD or others.

There are some "lite" versions of ATI video cards (e.g. some are labelled SE) that do not have the hardware (chips) on the card that support decoding DVD video, but that's not likely to apply to the AIW.
I know the ATI install will not install software support for DVD playback if you do not have a DVD drive - maybe it doesn't install the siftware for capturing it either in that case.

Also, do not rely on XP to install the drivers for ATI cards - it will not find all the required support for the card if it has enhanced features such as the AIW cards have. Install the ATI AIW drivers from the CD that came with it - you can also update those with newer drivers from the ATI web site. The DVD player software is only on the CD that came with the card - you may be able to update that online, but the original player software must already be installed.

Oops - you have a TV wonder.

The same applies regarding e.g. SE editions of ATI cards, you probably must have a DVD drive, use the ATI drivers on the CD, update them if you like if newer drivers are on the ATI web site.
