I own the 'AGP ATI Radeon9800XT 256mb 128BIT TV DVI' I have done everything by the book uninstalled old drivers using driver cleaner pro etc. What happens is when i start my computer with the card in and get 2 the desktop after a couple of minutes the comp will freeze or sometimes my screen will become muddled up and filled with weird colours and i cant see my desktop causing me 2 restart. If i'm lucky i can get the drivers intalled, but once back on the Desktop same thing happens after about 3 min my comp will freeze etc. when i try to play any games it does not work. i have a ATX400-12C ATX 12V P4 Power supply. 2 hard drives, 2x-512mbDDR'RAM, 1 PCI wireless internet adapter, NO dvd/cd rom drives. I have tryed a fresh install of windows!! i also experienced the same problems when i tryed to upgrade to a XFX Geforce 6200 agp. PLEASE HELP!!

The 9800XT is a 256-bit card.

"after a couple of minutes the comp will freeze or sometimes my screen will become muddled up and filled with weird colours"

Could be overheating, could be that your PSU is weak. Could also be that you don't have the video card connected to the PSU.

"i have a ATX400-12C ATX 12V P4 Power supply"

This one?

http://www.more-shop.co.uk/atx-400-...

There is no brand name but the specs are a little suspcious.

"i also experienced the same problems when i tryed to upgrade to a XFX Geforce 6200 agp"

The 6200 is a downgrade. But since the same thing happens, it rules out the GPU overheating & since the 6200 doesn't require the PSU connection, it rules that out as well...the PSU is still a possibility though. What about an overheating CPU?

I got the card off ebay from a seller in Hong Kong, it deff says on it 128BIT. i know its supposed 2 be 256bit. Everest Home edition even says 128BIT.
Yeah that is MY power supply black n everything got it for £20 tho!!
i bought the gf6200 about 4 months ago it didn't work so thougt i would buy an ATI card this time, 1 week ago, eg:the 9800xt!! it dont work either. What do u think i just get on the desktop 5 mins later my comp freezes a couple of times i ran a dxdiag and there was no Direct3D accel.. either the sometimes there was either way it stalls, i use a VGA monitor!

It's not a 9800XT then.

Looking at your original post, I see you list your board as "ASRock/K7S41". It's not a very good board but since it has integrated video, have you tried it to see if the problem occurs with that as well?

the full story. i order a 9800 pro off ebay i get sent a 9800 XT with DDR memory speed 400Mhz and core speed of 325mhz top spd'. I believe it may be modified! the ebay seller had 187 of these cards for sale as well as a number of other cards, in high quantities. the feed back left by other pple who have bought the same card as me(supposed to be 9800 pro) all say that everything was ok with there card, one even stated he got sent XT version but it worked anyway!!. so it must be my system the same thing happens with a gf6200 and fx5200(also tryed). i have a radeon 9200se in my comp @ the mo works fine. onboard gfx works fine and auto-diables it self etc.

You may as well suspect of bad RAM sticks.

If you have more than one stick, try them one by one to see if one RAM stick works well.

Or just test the sticks with a RAM tester such as memtest.

XT's use 256-bit memory so what you have must be a modified 9800Pro, but that doesn't explain why some cards work & others won't:

/gpudb/5/ATI_9800_Pro_(128-bit).html...thats my card the board is identical, floppy connector n sht, but the only diff is i have a completely different fan on mine. mine says "pc coole" on it and its huge big silver thing and it proper eats up the PCI slot nxt 2 it. thats why i think its modified. 128BIT core spd 325mhz mem speed of 180mhzDDR=360mhz. thats what it is running @ according 2 everest. and it deff says 9800 XT on box, in everest home edt, and after i installed it and run a dxdiag to find out theres no Direct3D accel or agp txtre acc, followed by a freeze/crash not long after, some times there is 3d accel but it will crash anyway. deff says 9800 XT i swear, windows update even installs 9800XT drivers. i am puzzled myself. maybe they flashed its bios if u can do that. anyway lets not dwell because pretty much the same thing happens with other working cards so it must be my comp setup, any ideas ideas ideas or reasons???. thanks for your time and help btw, appreciated!!

Why Not?

Do you have a floppy drive? Memtest86 can be run from a bootable floppy.

First of all, you do not give us enough info to comment further on the problem.

We understand you played a bit with RAM sticks. What did you do ? Removed one stick of RAM or switched slots ?

If you now have less RAM installed ( e.g. removed one out ), then you have to decrease the screen resolution of the game or add more RAM to be able to play that game. By the way I am no expert about games.

You may also have to reinstall the latest Direct X 9.0c ( August 2008 update )

Hope the above helps.

first i removed both ram stks. i started with the 512ram stick that was in slot 2 "(which is only 4months old, the other ram stk is about 3/4 years old)", i put it into slot 1. and was runnin the comp with one 512ram stk for a while, it was going smooth. gfx drivers installed ok!! then i try halo 2 and it freezes @ the title screen. so i swith off the comp and plug into slot 2, the other 512 origionaly from slot 1, the 3/4 years old one, back in thinking it need more mem. but the same thing happens @ title, crash!!
In the end tho, yeah i basicaly switched RAM slots!! tryed reinstall of drctX to no avail!

One of the RAM slots or one of the RAM sticks may be defective. If you can find and install one 1 GB RAM stick provided your M/B accepts that RAM size and play your game, then you can tell what is wrong.

Considering the fact that you cannot reinstall Direct X, some of the system files may be damaged. Can you install XP over itself, a repair install, before you go further on.

i installed a fresh copy of windows and the latest direct x only 3days ago. a doubt its that because the exact same thing happend b4/after the fresh install trying gf6200, ati 9800, gf fx5200! i have never ever had any problems with my current card gecube rad 9200se, it always works first time without fail and my old gf2 mx400 too. my m/b supports 1gb sticks 2gb max, am just after buyin this card 2-3 weeks ago 4 £50, since then because it didn't work i bought a sapph 9550 256mb for £35(delv. due 4 2moro). another purchase is out of the question for now. it is possibly the ram the minute i changed things we seen an improvement staight away i will continue "f---ing around" with them.!
also where can i find the older ATI drivers because when i install the latest ATI catalyst drivers from the amd ati website, my card SERIOUSLY does NOT like them drivers !! when i install it with them even after the ram was changed it crashes even b4 the desktop. i have never even got on 2 the desktop with they drivers it just bloody stalls everytime @ welcome screen sumtimes b4. ;)
