i have a ati radeon 9550 with 256mb for a video card, i just upgraded from a gforce 2. The only problem i have is that my monitor isnt the best, i constantly have to have my gamma adjusted. Now a nice feature with ati is the fact that you can supposedly have it automaticly change the gamma from the desktop settings to one that is suitable for gaming. The problem i am having is that this handy feature isnt working. It seems to know its a full screen 3d game im running and so it no longer uses the desktop gamma settings, however, it just stays dark so i cannot see what im doing. this wouldnt be a problem if the hot keys i set actually worked. so now i cannot play any of my games. does anyone know a solution to this problem.

i have already installed the latest drivers available.

Prob time to upgrade to a better monitor. seems the the monitor isn't adjusting well to the gamma settings. I'd try buying another monitor and see if that fixes the problem and if it doesn't then you can always take the monitor back and get your money back.

2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7800GT
SATA II 2x 200gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

Try loading the proper drivers for your monitor model - that may help your situation.

If that doesn't help, it sounds like your monitor's max brightness is below par and the real problem is the monitor is past it's prime and you will need to replace it.

Unless there is something wrong with the card itself, I doubt that you are experiencing hardware/software issues because of the card. Why don't you try another monitor if trying to rule out the possibility that it's your monitor, which I am sure it is.

look, i know its not the monitor, im about 99% sure that its a glitch with the software. i know for a fact that my monitor can play games if the gamma is adjusted, i did it with my gforce 2. so that rules out it being too bad to play games, what the problem is is that the catilyst program doesnt want to adjust the gamma like its suppose to do. and i only need someone who has had this problem and knows a solution.

If the ATI software is not working properly, there is probably something interfering with it.
If there are any entries in Add/Remove programs for your previous video, Remove (uninstall) it/them. If there are entries there for more than one version of the ATI software, Remove the older one.
Almost all programs warn you when you are installing them that you should have a minimum of programs running when you install them. Not paying attention to that can cause problems resulting in the software not installing properly. You could try using Msconfig - Startup (with no other extra programs running that aren't normally running when your Desktop is initially loaded), disabling ALL your Startup programs, Remove all the ATI software in Add/Remove, reboot, install the ATI software, then re-enable the Startup programs. Install the ATI software, not the ATI support built into Windows which does not have all of the features the ATI software has.

I have an older Radeon 7000 card that has recent ATI software installed for it. In Display - Settings - Advanced - Color - Game Gamma is where the gamma can be changed.

Outside of the above, if you are only having problems with the display being too dark in one game, or only in a few games, not all games will work properly on all combinations of hardware, and there's not much you can do about that. You could look for t-shooting suggestions on the game makers or ATI's web site, but sometimes you just can't get a game to display properly. Some times ATI will suggest you use alternate driver versions for certain games.

Another complication is if the video card is not made by ATI but is a clone made with ATI chips by another maker, sometimes the clone card is not wired up as ATI intended, and because of that the software made by ATI may not work properly.
