Hey, i just bought an ATI Radeon 9250 PCI Graphics Card, I've done intense reseacrh on the internet and nothing has helped. The problem is that, I insert the card into the First PCI Slot, and the comp hangs,
Now at this poiont I have uninstalled the OnBoard Chip, and Shared Memory to None and Aperture Size to 256MB in the BIOS, but it still hangs, Right when i press the Power Button. Both my moniter and F: Drive and HDD light are on. I removed the card and placed it into the 3rd PCI slot and same Thing.
But When I place it into the 2nd of 3 PCI slots, it starts normally except, no picture or beep.
So What is going on?!? Any Suggestions is greaty apreciated
And oh yeah, when i remove the Graphics card and connect my VGA cable back to the motherboard, My Comp starts up fine. And Yeah I've made sure i have connected the VGA cable to the New Card.
Yes i just said, i uninstaleld the Onboard video Driver, and made the SHARED MEMORY to NONE, I saw on a website that i Should set the aperture size to the size of the card which is 256MB and like ONCE I PRESS THE POWER, IT HANGS. LIKE RIGHT IMMEDIETELY.
You did NOT say that you removed the driver in the OP. And wherever you read that you should "set the aperture size to the size of the card" is wrong. The setting isn't related to how much memory is on the card. It should be set to either 64MB or 128MB...128MB is the prefered setting.
"ONCE I PRESS THE POWER, IT HANGS. LIKE RIGHT IMMEDIETELY"
If it hangs immediately, how are you getting into the BIOS? You have to be more clear on what's happening. Or are you using the onboard video to access the BIOS?
If it's hanging immediately, the problem has nothing to do with Windows or any drivers...it's either a BIOS setting or the card is defective. Do you have another system you can test the card in?
If the card isn't damaged then your motherboard’s current bios doesn't recognize that card plain and simple. That's the reason why you are running into this problem. Check to see who makes your motherboard, find that model of that motherboard that you have and see if they have any new bios updates on that motherboard. If they do then update your bios then try putting your card back in.
One more question that i forgot to ask how strong is your power supply and how many watts and amps are on the 12v+ rail? Look on the sticker under the 12v+ there should be an amp rating.
Even though the radeon 9250 isn't a power hungry card if you have 200watt generic power supply and you plug in a graphics card it could also lead to you not having enough power to power it up thus is why certain things turn on while others like graphics cards don't.
yeah it's good enough in wattage as the ati radeon 9250 requires at least 250 watts. I don't think the 10 amp is going to matter that much for this card considering a lot of 250 watt power supplies are usally around 10amps on the 12V+ rail.
You could and i stress could go out and buy a better power supply that has at least a 16 amp rating on the 12V+ rail as long as it's 250watts or higher and see if that makes a diff. If it doesn't, then you can always return the power supply and get your money back.
But before going to a store to buy another power supply, the next best thing is to contact the vendor of your motherboard. Tell them your model of that motherboard and explain to them your problem, they will know for sure based on there records what types of graphics cards were tested for that motherboard model and what types weren't, which would give you a good idea into what graphics card you can put in that motherboard.
I ran into the same problem with my old AMD K6-2 pc a while back. A lot of nvidia graphic cards wouldn't work with my motherboard, but just about all ATI graphics cards did.
I had a hell of a time trying to get PCI cards newer than the Radeon 7000/GeForce2 MX to run properly on a 1999 Intel 440BX board.
The problem was that the board didn't support PCI 2.2, which the newer PCI video cards require. If your board doesn't support the PCI 2.2 spec, you're out of luck. Most boards manufactured before 2000 do not support PCI 2.2 (though it really depends on the chipset). Do you know which chipset the board is based on, or at least the age of it?
Pentium III--Descendant of Intel Core. Pentium III-S 1400 @ 1.63GHz, 512K L2 X800XT AIW OC 580/600 2GB of RAM 250GB HD SB Audigy 2 QDI Advance 12 mobo Smugly running Vista
jackbomb is dead on, now that you mentioned the pci 2.2 requirement i forgot all about that considering it's been ages since i ran a graphics card on a pci slot.
If your motherboard was built before 2001 it's pci 2.1. Pci 2.2 didn't become standard on motherboards until jan 1st 2001. So this is why you prob can't run a pci 2.2 graphics card. All next gen pci graphic cards made after the end of 2000 were pci 2.2 compliant and the ATI radeon 9250 was made a few years after 2000, so that graphics card is more then likely a pci 2.2 card.
Hmm i was afraid something like that would've happened, and yes i think that could be it. Before updating the BIOS the "release Date" when i start up the comp was 08/22/2000 when i updated it was 08/22/2001 exactly one year after. Thanx for everyone responding, i really appreciate it, But one last question, can i get any graphics cards that are pci 2.1 or earlier?
Ok thank you, I Did see that Crad FX5500 at where i bought it, But it was of 256MB varient, I hope that one is 2.1 PCI as well. I will go and exchange the card.
This is just a suggestion.. Have you checked to see if its PCI express? maybe your board dowsn't support PCI EXPRESS! try an AGP video card to rule that out, and just reset the bios to also rule that out
