ATI mobility radeon 1150 prob with

Hi there,
I had a problem with my Dell Inspiron running an ATI Mobility radeon 1150 chip set. I think I am writing this all correctly but I'm not a tech wizard!
Thing is a while ago the keys started to take a long time to respond and the general system ran slowly. I tried lots and the latest effort has been to format the drive and start again.
By trial and error I have been able to find that it is the ATI radeon 1150 driver that causes the problem. Until I put this on the computer is fine - except the monitor display is in the wrong resolution and can't be changed to the correct one (desktop version of XP).
Any ideas howw can sort this? Is the motherboard knackered?
