Dell / DIMENSION 4600

Specs: Windows XP

My Dimension 4600 DEll Computer has ATI Radeon Video card. Its media player used to open only when I cliked on it. Now, after I make, by mistake, the association to all files, I could not open .asx streaming files using WIndows Media player. WIndows Media Player was the default Player previously. NOW I need Help in reverting back to Windows Media player so that I can play all the files using Windows Media Player, NOT ATI media player. I went into ATI configuration file and changed all the settings to Windows Media, but still it is ATI that is showing up when I opened the .asx files. It must have gotten into the registery or somewhere....thanks

Yes, file associations are written in the Windows registry, that's always been how you are able to double click on a particular file type and have the associated application open with that file. You can still play .asx files using WMP by just opening WMP and using the "" selection dialogue and browsing to select the .asx file you want to play. To get get .asx files re-associatied with WMP so that WMP opens up when you "doubleclick" on a .asx file, you should first try using the WMP configuration tool "options" and selecting the file types tab. Try re-setting WMP for .asx files with that dialogue. IF that doesn't work, then you'll have to go through the desktop Explorer's folder options dialogue with the "file types" tab and manually edit the .asx entry. That is tedious, but it's either that, or uninstall and reinstall WMP, or edit the registry directly (not a good idea if you don't know what your doing...).

In other words....
You can easily change which program opens a particular file type by default when you click or double click on that type of file.
Control Panel - Folder Options - File Types
Find the file extension of the file type you want to change which program opens it by default - highlight it.
Click on the Change button
Choose the program you want to open it with from the list - if the program isn't in the list, click on the Browse button and find the executable file (usually *.exe) for the program you want to open that type of file with, highlight it, click on Open.

You don't need to edit the registry.
