My crt died, I have an ATI 9800 pro radeon 128mb video card and I am looking to purchase a Viewsonic 19" 1930WM widescreen lcd because it is on special. The resolution required is 1440 x 900. According to the ati website, my card doesnt support that resolution, but I have read that for some people it works.
Does anyone have a 9800 pro card with an lcd widescreen using 1440 x 900 resolution that can confirm this for me?
ThanksNick S

The card actually goes up to 2048x1536, but I was wondering if it can run on 1440 x 900 (widescreen resolution).
Here is the list from the site:
640x480 200
800x600 200
1024x768 200
1152x864 200
1280x1024 160
1600x1200 120
1920x1080* 16:9 120
1920x1200 100
1920x1440 90
2048x1536 85
also it shows this, which is why im a but confused:

I believe the 9800 can go higher than that even. You may need to update the catylst drivers. Be sure to install the LCD drivers off the display CD. Go to the link below to DLoad the drivers.
I tried to find anyplace that states the max. resolution of that card and didn't find anything. I will say this. The max. resolution is determined by a combination of the number of pixels times the color depth. The refresh rate also comes into play.
Your card needs a certain amout of RAM in order to display the total. I am currently using a 22" wid screen running at 1650x1080 @32bit color depth using integrated video with 128MB shared RAM.
The drivers determine what resolutions can be displayed. I can't imagine that card not supporting those resolutions. Where you can run into problems is when running an older OS, like Win98. The drivers weren't written with wide screen displays in mind. That isn't the case with XP. I say go for it. The only other issue would be the connection type on the display.

Exactly. If you have an older driver version that was developed before widescreen displays became available, it obviously won't support 1440 x 900. All you need to do is download & install Catalyst version 7.10. There may also be a driver disc included with your new monitor that will also need to be installed.
