Comment:

I'm trying to decide between a new processor..

Athlon XP 2600+
P4 2.0
Celeron 2.7

I've been hardcore Intel for years, and never tried AMD before.

Just seeing if there are any pros and cons between these 3 processors before I make any final decisions.

I would get something better.. but there is a budget.

Thanks in advance!

Celeron is very slow compared to other 2. My opinion is the other 2 are comparable. But the P4 probably is faster. I have a 2600+ and I do video editing (have never been happier with the speed). Hope that helps

When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

I recommend you go with AMD...ofcourse this also means a new mainboard, memory and possibly HSF depending on your choice between retail or OEM.

Regarding the 2600+ there are 3 of them.

0. Athlon XP 2600+ 256KB L2 Cache 266MHz FSB
Tbred @ 2.13GHz (16.0x133MHz)

1. Athlon XP 2600+ 256KB L2 Cache 333MHz FSB
Tbred @ 2.08Ghz (12.5x166Mhz)

2. Athlon XP 2600+ 512KB L2 Cache 333MHz FSB
Barton @ 1.9GHz (11.5x166Mhz)

The bold one is the most popular because of it's L2 cache and it's overclocking prowess. You should get a good board and some decent memory @ least PC3200 to go with it if you intend to overclock.

Goodluck.

Rule of thumb for rated cpu ghz relevance

(amd xp ghz x 4/3) = (p4 ghz) = (celeron ghz x 4/5)

I personally stay away from athlon. True, it does have Cache, but thats pretty much all it has. Now I dont know if they resolved this issue but at the time Athlon was lacking in multimedia. The result? Translating DVD format to mpeg. etc. the sound n video quality gets garbled...from personal experience...

I hope you make the right choice in the end and let us know the result

Between those three !!!

Go with the AMD Kayotic !!! those probs are long gone with amd.

I run Intel I admit but I will stack the AMD against it any time.

Okay I see. The 256>512 % is so high that it must be for some specific test. I've done the 256?512 upgrade myself and recommend it but do not see how 30% could be true in overall terms.
