I read that an Athlon XP 2000 performs just as good as a P4 2.0 Ghz. I am wondering how does a xp 1700 perform compared to the p4? Thanks

Well, even though the AMD ratings are supposed to be a performance comparison to a 1GHz Athlon they actually correspond quite well to P4 speeds. So XP1700 ~= P4 1700

Thats correct. The reason Athlons have slower Clock speeds but are just as fast as P4s is becuase Athlons do less Cycles, but they transfer more data each cycle, so it ends up being as fast.
Plus you can easily overclock Athlons to be even faster.
