CPU/Ram: Athlon XP 2600+ 512MB RAM
Comment:

Hi, ive just built my own system:
A7V8X MB Athlon XP 2600+ 512MB DDR RAM 40 Gb HDD Geforce 4 MX 64MB Graphics.
Under system properties, it says my processor is Athlon XP 2000+ 2.08 GHz.
The FSB speed is 333mhz. I set the bios to the hightest value for the cpu, i do not know this number exactly but I had three choices when I first powered up and Manual, I selected the highest of about 258XX mhz?
The warning alongside this stated that it was ok to select this if the FSB was 333mhz.
Everything works fine, my cpu temp is approx 50-59oC. Can anyone please let me know why it does not say actual retail box type (2600+) And if my settings have affected this.
Thanks in advance.

All I can say is double check your bios settings and use the instruction manual that came with motherboard and cpu. My xp 2000+ processor reads as so but at 1.67Ghz. The package the processor came in should have the speed written on it. Also you do have 512 mb of pc 2700 to enjoy your 333mhz fbs I hope.

try setting cpu type jumper to fsb 166 on motherboard. (look at your motherboard manual and find where the cpu type select jumper is) it should work like 12.5x166 or 6.25x332 (2075mhz) i never heard fsb333. it is 133 i think. and it should be 166.

The 2600+ is designed to run at a clock speed of 2133 MHz with a 266 buss (which, if I understand things correctly, means 133 since AMD doubles it) 133*16=2128

My motherboard states it is "jumper free" and I cannot find any jumpers on it to "switch from 133 to 166"?.
The memory stick is PC2700 DDR 333Mhz 512MB. The table in my instructions for the mobo says DDR 333 memory supports FSB 200/266/333Mhz. Also: DDR Transfer Rate 333Mhz = 166Mhz DDR Base Frequency. It's all too confusing for me. I'll make a few adjustments in the BIOS.

Here is my BIOS settings for the CPU:

CPU Speed: 2083Mhz (options: manual 1667Mhz 1250Mhz)
CPU Frequency Multiple: 12.5x
CPU Extended Freq. Mhz: 166/33
Memory Frequency (Mhz): 333 (options: AUTO)
CPU Vcore setting: AUTO (options: Manual)
CPU Vcore setting: 1.650v
AGP Voltage: AUTO
DRAM Voltage: AUTO

The first value is what is selected. Is there anything here i need to adjust to make the OS show the actual processor type? i.e AMD XP 2600+ (NOT XP 2000+)

Is it possible that I have been sold a 2000+ CPU instead of a 2600+ type? Although the box it came in was a retail sealed box which clearly stated it was the true type.

Any follow-up appreciated.

Have you tried the AUTO setting in BIOS for CPU freq mult? I have the A7N8X board and a 2400+ Athlon and it set itself up correctly with Auto. (133 CPU Ext Freq)

There is no AUTO for the CPU freq multiple. Just a long list of ??x
It even detects it as a 2000+ in the POST screen.
Is there any way of testing the CPU, to see if it is actually running at this speed, if thats possible. Or if it says 2000+ then is that how it performs?

WCPUID utility (free) will tell you everything you want to know about your installed CPU. Download from here:

Thanks rac, it says the name string of my processor is Athlon XP 2000+ as windows detects it. Hmm... funny how ebuyer sold me a 2600+ processor.

Methinks I'd contact the seller, and if I didn't get immediate satisfaction I'd file a formal complaint with ebay regarding a dishonest sale.

Cheers i will do that. It was htp://www.ebuyer.co.uk whom i purchased the CPU from. I've sent them an email with the details of the report from WCPUID.

The fact that the CPU was in a sealed retail box marked Athlon XP 2600+ leads me to believe that it may well be a manufacturing error and therefore may pass it off as "not responsible".
