I know that Ultra ATA Hard drives run faster in mode 1, How do I know what mode mine is running in, and if it's not already in mode one how do i change it?????

If mode one is the best, why doesn't the OS make that the default? What do the different modes mean? and will changing it to mode one affect anything else? will it negatively affect the HD?

UDMA mode is set in the drives hardware.Enable DMA and go to your chipset makers'(Intel,Via,etc)web-site and Download"IDE accelerator 2.2" or "IDE Mini-port support",it will increase your HDD performance.
